Sheila Johnson’s entrepreneurial journey threads through media, hospitality, and sports with a builder’s patience and a visionary’s reach. She co-founded Black Entertainment Television (BET) in 1979 with Robert L. Johnson, shaping a platform that amplified Black culture and grew into a landmark media brand; the company was later sold to Viacom in a multibillion-dollar deal announced in 1999. After exiting BET, she reinvested her energy and capital into new arenas—most notably founding Salamander Hotels & Resorts in 2005—translating her instinct for audience, quality, and experience from television to high-touch hospitality.
Johnson also became a rare presence in major-league ownership as a vice chair and partner of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, connected with the Washington Wizards (NBA), Capitals (NHL), and Mystics (WNBA), underscoring her ability to build value across industries. Alongside business growth, she’s kept a steady philanthropic and arts footprint—supporting education, design, and global anti-poverty initiatives—reflecting an ethos that blends enterprise with impact.

Maggie Lena Walker (1864–1934) was a pioneering businesswoman, educator, and community leader who transformed economic empowerment for Black Americans in the early 20th century. Born in Richmond, Virginia to a formerly enslaved mother, Walker rose from humble beginnings to become the first Black woman in the United States to charter and lead a bank — the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank.
Through her work with the Independent Order of St. Luke, she promoted financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and collective strength within her community. She also founded The St. Luke Herald, a newspaper that encouraged education, self-sufficiency, and women’s advancement.
Walker’s vision of “turning pennies into dollars” laid the foundation for generational wealth and opportunity during a time of deep segregation and inequality. Her story is one of resilience, leadership, and purpose — a reminder that when we rise together, we build legacies that endure.
